I KNOW I NEED IT – BUT I DON’T WANT IT – EVEN IF IT’S QUICK, EASY and INEXPENSIVE!

Incartek runs an internet business selling print-your-own inkjet photo albums.  Not high tech – file organisation or on-line sharing – but smart albums that you can be proud of and show your friends, using quality photo glossy or photo art archival paper. 

We did some market research and found that 97% of people wanted to keep their best photos for life:  many of these wanted them to be passed on ‘for generations’.  They also recognised that they could lose their valuable and cherished memories for ever if they left them on technologically obsolescent and hardware failure prone disks, or committed to on-line services of companies which go out of business or supersede services so regularly.  The printed document (in duplicate if you are worried about fire or flood) remains the only secure service.

I can say – based on 44 years in the computer business that if you rely on continued availability of hardware, software or service you WILL have problems.

The albums are inexpensive – are quite quick to use (I reckon an hour per album) easy to use – and so easy to add a story.  But they mean changing the way you think – admitting that you cannot depend on technology for anything lasting – Just admit it: “I’m not safe that way – the old way is best.”  

BUT

They are not selling like they should.  Natural inertia – I summarised the

attitude “I know I need it – but I don’t want it – even if it’s easy and inexpensive!”.

How do you induce people to act? 

How do you induce people to change the way they think?

I KNOW I NEED IT – BUT I DON’T WANT IT – EVEN IF IT’S NO WORK AT ALL and COMPLETELY FREE!

It’s like Christianity.  There is a benefit – the enjoyment of total security as to the future, and the certainty of a current, living and eternal relationship with a loving God[1].

There is also a warning – not 97% but 100% of people (you and I included) will face death one[2] day – when you don’t know – God does – then what?  (Don’t fool yourself).   

There is another certainty – not a probability.  Why? Not the loss of your memories in picture form because of computer failure but because of your own failure.  Not because of probable technological obsolescence, but because of certain eternal destiny.  Not because of temporary satisfaction, but because of lasting happiness.

Your sins are yours - what’s done cannot be undone, and that separates you from a sin-hating God – now and for ever. Don’t say you haven’t sinned[3]. Thee Bible says “If you die in your sins you will be raised in your sins”  – Your soul, that’s YOU,  will be eternally lost – alone – with no companionship but conscious remorse.  That is why hell is described as a fire[4].  What’s more – without the certainty of life to come, how can you really enjoy life now? 

Like with the obsolete files, I can say that based on over 50 years as a Christian – without Christ you will be lost – and with Him is happiness.

See the parallel?  You just have to change the way of thinking.  We are brought up to think that we can do everything ourselves: be masters of our own destiny.  The thought of accepting that you cannot do anything for yourself – that your salvation depends on what another has done for you runs totally opposite to popular notions.  Your efforts won’t help you[5]; your ‘rights’ won’t help you; religion won’t help you; going to church won’t help you.  Even saying I do unto others what they should do to me, won’t help you.

Remember what I said about the photos on your computer.  – Just admit it: “I’m not safe that way – the old way is best.”

The old way: believing the gospel – that’s God’s good news.  Believing that the only one who was here without sin – that is Jesus – (Christians believe that He was God coming here as a man – to meet man in his need) - the only one who had the right to live for ever here – gave His life for you.[6] 

So what do you have to do?  Nothing!   What does it cost?  Nothing!  Do I have to buy or read anything?  No!  Do I have to go to church?  No!  Do I have to become religious?  No – in fact don’t!.  Do I have to talk to a priest?  No way! Why – because if you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, God will look at what he did.  He did not accept your works – He accepted Jesus’s.

A year or so ago a very wealthy religious man who had given millions to charity said to me “I hope that God accepts me for what I’ve done”.  My reply “My dear friend, I know that God has already accepted me because of what Jesus has done”.

If you are concerned – turn to God and ask Him to forgive you your sins.  “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”.  Accept Jesus as your personal Saviour.  God will give you His Holy Spirit who will guide you into all the truth.[7]
